Dr. Katharina Schmidt (*St. Goar am Rhein) studied Theatre History, Art History, Philosophy and Psychology at the Universities of Munich and Vienna, where she completed her PhD in 1968. From 1972 to 1980 she was a curator at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf. From 1981–1985 she was Director of the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden; in 1985 she was appointed Director of the Kunstmuseum Bonn where she stayed until 1992, having overseen the building of the new extension. In 1990 she was awarded the ART Cologne Prize for Exhibitions and Research into Contemporary Art; in 1994 she received the Bundesverdienstkreuz 1. Klasse awarded by the Federal Republic of Germany.

From 1992-2001 Schmidt was Director of the Öffentliche Kunstsammlung Basel (Kunstmuseum, Museum für Gegenwartskunst and the Emanuel Hoffmann-Stiftung) and is still a member of numerous international panels and cultural foundations. Katharina Schmidt lives in Zurich.
