Vija Celmins, 1938 in Riga, Lettland geboren, lebt und arbeitet seit 1981 überwiegend in New York. Bereits 1948 emigrierte ihre Familie in die USA. Celmins besuchte das John Herron Institute in Indianapolis und schloss ihr Studium 1965 mit einem Master of Fine Arts in Malerei an der University of California ab. Sie arbeitete als Kunstlehrerin in Los Angeles und unterrichtete später u.a. an der Copper Union, New York, und der Yale Graduate School in Connecticut.
